ISRAEL OPENS PAVILION AT WORLD HUMANITARIAN SUMMIT: By: Colleen Wells

An Israeli delegation led by a top diplomat arrived in Turkey to represent Israel at the first World Humanitarian Summit. Dore Gold, the director-general of Israel’s Foreign Ministry, cut the ribbon of the Israeli pavilion at the summit on 24 May 2016. The summit taking place in Istanbul, is organized by the UN and aims to reinvigorate and provide an overview of relief efforts worldwide. Noting Israel’s contribution in recent years to relief efforts in Rwanda, Turkey, Japan, the Philippines, Nepal and Haiti – where in 2010 Israel built a field hospital and provided aid to victims of a devastating earthquake – Gold wrote on Twitter that "Israeli humanitarian intervention reflects Jewish value of Tikun Olam,” or repairing the world. With Gold was Gil Haskel, head of Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation, which helps developing countries deal with disasters, provides medical assistance and aids in building national strength. "Israel is proud to play a central role and to stand at the forefront of international aid to developing countries and disaster-stricken areas,” Haskel said. (Arutz-7) [Comment]

3.2 MILLION IMMIGRANTS TO ISRAEL:By: Colleen Wells

Some 3.2 million people have immigrated to Israel since the founding of the state in 1948, according to a report released on Wed. 25 May 2016, by the Central Bureau of Statistics. The immigration figures, which reflect Aliyah from 1948 to 2015, show that immigration was heavily concentrated in two major waves: the first from 1948 through 1951, and the second from 1990 to 1999. Since the beginning of the second wave of mass immigration in 1990, when large numbers of Jews from Warsaw Pact countries made Aliyah, some 1.35 million immigrants have come to Israel, or about 42% of all Aliyah since 1948. While Aliyah in recent years has been slow – particularly since the Second Intifada – the rate of immigration has been trending upward since 2008. Last year saw a 15.7% increase in total immigration rates over 2014, with 27,908 immigrants. Since 1972, some 115,195 immigrants from the USA have made Aliyah, and the rate of American Aliyah is on the rise. According to the report, the top destinations for American immigrants are Jerusalem, which is home to 29,882 American émigrés who arrived since 1972. Tel Aviv was a distant second with 10,620. Celebrating Jewish icons: Ilan RamonBy: Michael Chua

Some little boys dream of being fighter pilots. Some dream of being astronauts.

Israeli born Ilan Ramon was both - and a whole lot more.

The son and grandson of Holocaust survivors (his mother and grandmother were held in the infamous Auchwitz camp), Ilan Ramon was raised in Beersheba Israeli. As a young man, he joined the Israeli Air Force where his natural talents were recognized and he was accepted as a fighter pilot. During his service, Ramon saw action in the Yom Kippur War and the first Lebanon war. He flew in the operation to destroy Iraq's nuclear facility in 1981.

After those sorties, Ramon's star continued to rise, straight on through the the air force (where he eventually made Colonel) and into the prestigious ranks of NASA. Ramon made history and became the first Jewish man in space. Though he was tragically lost in the Challenger disaster along with six other astronauts, his legacy as a inspirational Jewish figure lives on.

Ramon's accomplishments alone would make him a historic figure. However, it is his humility, humanity, and introspection on the Jewish experience that really makes him stand out.

Although personally secular, Ramon never lost sight of the rich history of his culture or the many sacrifices that were made by his people to lead to a world where a Jewish man could fly through space. During his extraterrestrial trip, Ramon brought several Jewish artifacts and mementos with him to celebrate his people.

Among the objects he carried into space was a crude drawing of the earth, as if seen from the perspective of someone standing on the moon. The drawing was made by a 14 year old who died in the Terezin concentration camp. He also brought with him a small Torah. This particular Torah originally belonged to a rabbi in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. He gave it to a man named young man, Joachim Joesph, after performing a secret bar mitzvah for him under the nose of German guards. Joseph would survive the camp and become one the scientist at NASA working on the Challenger mission. Both he and Ramon agreed that it would be a touching tribute to take the Torah into space, escaping the bonds of worldly hatred.

Two months after the disaster, Ramon's personal diary was found mostly intact in Palestine, Texas. The unlikeness of a book made of paper and cardboard surviving an explosion and subsequent 37 mile journey is nothing short of a miraculous. Inside, the diary contained the Sabbath kiddush prayer for Ramon to recite during the Sabbath in a radio transmission to earth. He also wrote about the strange beauty of being a man who "lives and works in space, just like in the movies" and viewing and a lightning storm that was traveling over multiple countries in Asia.

This was a man who understood the beauty and majesty of the world God has given us and the triumphant reliance of the Jewish people. Ilan Ramon may have been taken from us, but we can all learn from his humble, joyful, spirit.

IDF SUCCESSFULLY TESTS ‘IRON DOME OF THE SEA’: By: Colleen Wells

Israel has successfully tested a maritime missile interception system dubbed the Iron Dome of the Sea, the military announced on Wed. 18 May 2016. The system, which can shoot down short-range rockets similar to those fired from Gaza, successfully destroyed "several" missiles, Ariel Shir, head of operational systems in the navy, said. "The test proved the Israeli navy's ability to protect Israel's strategic assets at sea against short-range strategic rockets". During the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip, Israel deployed its Iron Dome system on land to shoot down rockets fired across the border. A similar system has been in development for several years and was revealed to the public mid-week. Israel has a number of assets at sea, including a major offshore gas rig around 16 nautical miles from Gaza. Hamas has previously targeted the installation unsuccessfully. Any damage to the rig could be potentially hugely damaging to the Israeli economy, since it provides large amounts of the country's energy needs. (Arutz-7) [Comment]

Refugees in Israel need your compassion more than everBy: Michael Chua

As unrest in the region spreads like wildfire, it's God's most vulnerable children that are likely to be caught in the blaze. Tens of thousands of displaced African refugees have fled to the safety and security of Israel over the past few years to escape the ongoing violence and turmoil in countries such as Sudan, Eritrea, and the Congo. Many of these refugees are children or vulnerable women who lack education and resources.

These poor souls who have been victimized over and over again in their home countries have made the trek to Israel. Those who survive the journey often have nothing to their name. No money, no contacts, no prospects. They are dependent on the kindness of strangers to survive.

In these days of ongoing strife, terrorist attacks, and flat out war against Christianity, it is all too easy to  harden our hearts. To think of strangers from another land not as people, but potential threats. To get frustrated with the never ending cycle of violence and displacement that seems to go on-and-on and honestly, get tired of helping what can be seen as a hopeless cause.

But this isn't the way of the Lord. God would never look down at any of his children as a "hopeless cause.” As was written in Deuteronomy, the Jewish people (and by extension, those of us who support the Jewish people) have an extra obligation to help the suffering, "…Love the Stranger for you were Strangers in the Land of Egypt… "

The Jewish people know what it is to be dispossessed, on the run, and with no home to call their own. From Egypt to Germany, the Jewish people have had to suffer similar circumstances and trials. But rather than become bitter or resentful, they learned from the experiences. Israel has a proud tradition of charity and kindness in its history, even as tensions mount today.

While there are certainly real difficulties facing the question of what to do with long-term refugees in Israel, and how to prevent such migration from being necessary in the first place, it is important that we don't lose sight of the here-and-now. These people need our help, and as followers of Christ it is our duty to assist them however we can.

When we place compassion first, real results are possible. Look at the story of Nancy, a migrant from Sudan who had been working since she was eleven years old. Fearing conditions in their home (where they faced mounting pressure to convert to Islam), her family made the journey to Israel in hopes of a better life. Sadly, they were soon separated and Nancy was left to fend for herself.

Her story could have very well ended tragically. But, thanks to the compassion and hard work of the Christians at the Camel Shelter, her family was reunited, Nancy was able to complete a high school education, and together they actually have hope for a future free from poverty and free to proudly live as Christians without fear of violence or retribution. That is the true impact of charity and compassion – better lives for the most vulnerable.

The world is troubled and it is easy to get discouraged. But we must never let the evil of others make us forget our own priorities and beliefs as Christians.

NEW EGYPTIAN TEXTBOOK PORTRAYS ISRAELI-EGYPTIAN PEACE TREATY IN POSITIVE LIGHT: By: Colleen Wells

A textbook introduced this semester by the government of President Abdul-Fatah al-Sisi requires Egyptian pupils to memorize the provisions of the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty and delineate the ”advantages of peace for Egypt and the Arab states.” The assignments from the ninth grade book, The Geography of the Arab World and the History of Modern Egypt, are part of a change to a more robust and positive treatment of peace with Israel than that manifested in books during the three decades in power of al-Sisi’s predecessor Hosni Mubarak.

The changes come in the context of an overall improvement in Egyptian-Israeli relations. In late February 2016, Egypt’s new ambassador, Hazem Khairat, presented his diplomatic credentials to Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, becoming Cairo’s first senior emissary to Israel since 2012. Earlier that month, amid reports of Egyptian-Israeli security cooperation against ISIS in the Sinai Peninsula, al-Sisi praised Israeli PM Netanyahu’s leadership abilities to a delegation of visiting American Jewish leaders in Cairo. Israeli analysts say that shared enmity towards the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip is helping to bring the two countries closer. But direct ties with Israel are still frowned upon within Egyptian society. In March, 2016 more than two-thirds of the Egyptian parliament’s members voted to oust MP Tawfiq Okasha after he hosted a dinner for Israeli ambassador Haim Koren. (Ynet) Intercede that peaceful relations between Israel and Egypt will continue to unfold and to grow towards prophetic fulfillment: "In that day Israel will be one of three with Egypt and Assyria - a blessing in the midst of the land, whom the Lord of hosts shall bless, saying, ‘Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.’” Isa 19:24-25

METHODIST CHURCH WITHDRAWS FROM ANTI-ISRAEL COALITION- REJECTS ISRAEL DIVESTMENT: By: Colleen Wells

The United Methodist Church (UMC) voted down four resolutions that called on the Church to divest from companies doing business with Israel. At its May 10-20 General Conference in Portland, Ore., the UMC also voted—478 in favor and 318 against—to withdraw its membership, financial support, and staff participation from the "U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation,” a coalition encouraging boycotts of Israel. "This one-sided political coalition’s website (www.endtheoccupation.org) reveals that its agenda includes seeking ‘to isolate Israel economically, socially, and culturally,’ and promoting ‘comprehensive divestment’ against Israel, while overlooking anti-Israel aggression,” stated the UMC petition that called for withdrawal from the anti-Israel coalition. "Blaming only one side while ignoring the wrongdoing of Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran will not advance the cause of peace.” Roz Rothstein, CEO of the pro-Israel education and advocacy group StandWithUs, said, "By severing its ties with anti-Israel groups, the UMC has reaffirmed its role as an agent of reconciliation and peacemaking between Israelis and Palestinians.” (Algemeiner) A victorious report! Thank you intercessors for continuing to intercede against all efforts to slander, boycott and to isolate Israel. Please continue to pray! [Comment]

POLICE CATCH 60,000 GRENADE SPRINGS HEADED TO GAZA: By: Colleen Wells

Israeli police on Wed.19 May 2016, captured a shipment of 60,000 hand-grenade springs on their way to the Gaza Strip. The springs were found hidden in a warehouse on the Gaza periphery. Officials arrested a man in his twenties at the scene as he was loading the springs onto his vehicle. The man, a resident of the Bedouin town of Rahat, was believed to be on his way to smuggle the equipment into Gaza. He is suspected of procuring the springs illegally from an Israeli factory that produces them for the Israeli military. Two other people were arrested as well. Officials said the man planned to transfer the springs over to terrorists in Gaza, and suspect that he eventually planned to smuggle 500,000 such springs into the Palestinian enclave. Authorities claimed the arrest was indicative of a wider problem in which the transfer of merchandise, aid and equipment into Gaza through Israeli crossings is used to smuggle in weaponry and material used by terrorists. (Times of Israel) Continue to pray that guns, ammunition, rocket parts, and terrorist tunnel building materials will be discovered and prevented from being smuggled into the Gaza Strip. May all future plans, on the part of Gaza terrorist groups, to attack, maim, kill, and to kidnap Israelis as well as to destroy Israel’s military, industrial and residential property be frustrated and thwarted. ISRAEL HEADED FOR A RECESSION: By: Colleen Wells

Israeli economists warn the country could be on the verge of a recession, following surprisingly slow GDP growth in the first quarter of 2016. Israel’s economy expanded by a paltry 0.8% in the first quarter of 2016. Given the country’s 2.0% annual population growth rate, that amounts to a decline in per capita GDP. This quarter’s anemic growth follows a robust 3.1% growth in GDP in the fourth quarter of 2015. The rapid decline has some experts concerned Israel could be heading for a serious economic downturn. While consumer spending was up a whopping 4% - fueled in part by record low interest rates - Israeli businesses saw negative growth, contracting by 0.4%. Exports were especially hard hit, suffering from a global decline in trade. Excluding the diamond and hi-tech industries, Israeli exports fell by 12.9%, while imports rose by 7.5%. Recessions, defined by two consecutive quarters of negative growth, tend to occur every 8 to 10 years. While Israel’s economy took a hit during the global financial crisis of 2008, the downturn did not lead to a full-blown recession in Israel. (INN) [Comment]

BENJAMIN NETANYAHU SEEKS ULTRANATIONALISTS FOR COALITION IN ISRAEL: By: Colleen Wells

In a sharp turnaround, PM Benjamin Netanyahu sought on Wed. 18 May 2016 to bring the ultranationalist Yisrael Beiteinu party into his governing coalition by offering to name its leader, Avigdor Lieberman, defense minister, according to politicians across Israel’s political map. Liberman confirmed later in the day that he had accepted Netanyahu's offer to bring the party's six seats into the coalition, expanding it from 61 to 67 seats, in exchange for the defense portfolio and support for certain legislation backed by the party. Lieberman, 57, foreign minister in two previous governments led by Netanyahu, is known as a blunt-talking, polarizing figure. He demands the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of acts of terrorism, and has called in the past for the toppling of Hamas, the Islamic terrorist group that controls Gaza. Netanyahu has been seeking to stabilize and strengthen his governing coalition, which is dominated by right-wing and religious parties, because it currently holds a majority of only one in the 120-seat Knesset. The addition of Yisrael Beiteinu would give Netanyahu’s coalition 67 seats.

The Israeli government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, asserted that Lieberman, who immigrated to Israel from the Soviet Union in the 1970s and lives in a Judea & Samaria settlement, had voiced support for a Palestinian state and that a right-wing government would have more credibility with the Israeli public to take difficult steps for peace without fear of compromising Israel’s security. But Lieberman has been scathing in his criticism of President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority. He has called for the ouster of Abbas and denounced his campaign for upgraded Palestinian status at the UN as "diplomatic terrorism.” (J.Post/NY Times) Pray for wise and strengthening changes in Israel’s government.
