EGYPTIAN AIRLINER EXPLODES MID-AIR, CRASHES INTO MEDITERRANEAN: TERRORISM NOT RULED OUT:By: Colleen Wells

EgyptAir flight MS804 from Paris to Cairo disappeared from radar early Thurs. morning 19 May 2016. Egyptian officials believe that a mid-air explosion caused the plane to crash into the Mediterranean. Egypt's Sherif Ismail said all possible causes of the explosion were being examined - including terrorism. Airline officials stated that the plane's emergency beacon had been detected some two hours after the last radar contact. The crew of a ship not far from the plane's last known location claimed to have seen a huge fireball in the sky. In the middle of the flight, radio contact with the plane was lost, and the flight disappeared from radar. Officials said they were not ruling out terrorism as a possible cause of the crash. Last October an Airbus A321 jetliner operated by the Russian Metrojet company crashed in the Sinai Peninsula, likely the result of a bomb smuggled onboard by ISIS terrorists. An EgyptAir mechanic with ties to ISIS is suspected of sneaking the bomb onto the Metrojet plane. (Arutz-7) [Comment]

EGYPT DISCONNECTS LAST POWER LINE, SOUTHERN GAZA BLACKED OUT: By: Colleen Wells

Southern Gaza is in a total electricity blackout, and even the Palestinian Authority news outlet Maan admits it's not Israel's fault. Though reports of electricity shortages in Gaza are generally accompanied by unjustified finger-pointing at Israel for the situation, the 16 May 2016, report by Maan barely mentioned Israel. Instead, it implied that the responsibility for the new situation lies squarely on the shoulders of Egypt. Gaza’s electricity company announced that the two lines that fed electricity from Egypt to southern Gaza, at a capacity of 20-24 megawatts, have now been completely disconnected by Egypt. The first one was disabled two weeks ago, leading to rationing of "six hours on, 12 hours off" for all districts in Gaza. (Arutz-7) Sadly, it must be noted that a major reason the Hamas controlled Gaza Strip is so poor it can’t pay its electricity bills, or provide needed assistance to the population it has impoverished, is because it uses massive percentages of foreign aid monies to further its chief – if not only – goal; the destruction of the Jewish state. With money donated for humanitarian aid, the Hamas terrorist group buys weapons and builds sophisticated terrorist attack tunnels to use against Jewish communities; from innocent babies, to IDF soldiers, mothers, fathers, and the elderly. In return, Gaza’s self-imposed misery knows no bounds. "Gaza will shave her head in mourning” Jer 47:5 [Comment]

BILL CLINTON: ‘I KILLED MYSELF TRYING TO GIVE PALESTINIANS A STATE:By: Colleen Wells

Former USA President Bill Clinton came to his wife's defense on Friday, 13 May 2016 when the focus of a campaign event for the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton shifted to Israel. Amid a speech discussing his wife's positions on the major issues at an event in New Jersey, a member of the audience interjected "What about Gaza?" and criticized her statement that neutrality is not an option when it comes to Israel. "I killed myself to give the Palestinians a state," the former President responded. "I had a deal they turned down that would have given them all of Gaza." When the audience member continued to press the issue, Clinton elaborated on the complicated nature of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. "Hamas is really smart. When they decide to rocket Israel, they insinuate themselves in the hospitals, in the schools, in the highly populous areas. Hamas has said they try to put the Israelis in a position of either not defending themselves or killing innocents. They're good at it," he elaborated. [Comment]

RIVLIN: REUNIFICATION OF JERUSALEM IS ISRAEL’S GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT: By: Colleen Wells

Israel’s most impressive accomplishment is the reunification of Jerusalem, President Reuven Rivlin said on Sunday,15 May 2016 in a meeting with members of an Israel Bonds delegation. Rivlin, a seventh-generation Jerusalemite, who seldom misses an opportunity to tell his guests that he is the son of the son of the son of a native Jerusalemite going back seven generations and that his grandchildren are ninth-generation Jerusalemites, is a staunch advocate for Israel’s capital. When interviewed, his customary greeting and farewell is: "Shalom, from Jerusalem.” On Sunday, the Gregorian calendar date of the 68th anniversary of Israel’s Declaration of Independence, Rivlin hosted a 140-member Israel Bonds delegation – the largest ever to come to Israel – which was visiting the country as part of the organization’s 65th anniversary celebrations. What the book of Peter can teach us about FacebookBy: Michael Chua

Social media can be a confusing and intimidating space for the upstanding Christian. There are so many messages on Facebook and Twitter, and not very many of them are positive or affirming of a Christian lifestyle.

Then there is the matter of what you should post, how you should conduct yourself. As a Christian, we feel an extra responsibility to conduct ourselves properly in front of others, sometimes for honest and true reasons, and sometimes (sadly) for appearances sake. But as humans, we're given to the same petty impulses and temptations as the next person.

It can be hard to know where to draw the line. You don't want to seem like a wet-blanket, tsking like a schoolmarm at every other post you see. Nor do you want social media to become a source of pride, an impediment to your walk with the Lord. How often is too often to share a selfie of you with your group of friends, or that amazing steak and asparagus dish you make so well? Are you sharing, or bragging? Celebrating, or showing off?

Thankfully, even when it comes to such a modern phenomenon, we can turn to scripture to help us find the way.  When I worry about how I'm conducting myself online, I think of a verse from the book of Peter that always helps me find my priorities.

Peter 3:15-16

But in your hearts, revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

This is the truth of it. Instead of worrying about how you look, worry about how you feel. Make sure the Lord is always in your heart and guiding all of your actions – even those silly cat GIFs you like to post. If you're honestly sharing selfies and posting about your day-to-day life in celebration of the light of the Lord and the blessings he's bestowed on you, and not just using it as a vehicle to brag or feel superior, then post away.

Similarly, it's important to treat others with "gentleness and respect.” You don't need to be out there vocally sharing your displeasure at everything that rubs you the wrong way. Obviously, if you see something that strikes you as wrong or evil, don't be afraid to decry it for what it is, but let the little annoyances pass. Instead, focus on being a good example. Show people the love and compassion of a Christian who walks with the Lord, the absolute joy that can come from living a righteous and honest life in Christ. In short, conduct yourself in such a manner that someone would be ashamed to speak maliciously against your good behavior.

True when it was written, and true today.

Hamas crashes Big Brother in an attempt to intimidate Israeli familiesBy: Michael Chua

Talk about "must not see TV.”

On March 11, Hamas, acting like cheap knock-off comic book villains, hijacked the airwaves to issue a bizarre threat to the Jewish people. The satellite feed of Channel 2's  Big Brother broadcast was interrupted and compromised. Instead the expected group of twenty-something men and women deciding who to vote out of the house, viewers were greeted with something much stranger (yes, stranger than reality TV), an anti-Israeli propaganda film.

The three-and-a-half-minute clip included scenes of Hamas fighters committing acts of terrorism. wounded Palestinian civilians (held up as a product of Jewish "aggression”) and "brave” Hamas fighters. The clip celebrated the January 1 Tel Aviv attack and the recent stabbing murder of Jewish civilians while a superimposed threat taunted viewers, "learn from history, flee for your lives and get out of our country.” All this hatred was set to some cheesy over-dramatic music, and concluded with a message, "stay in your homes. The story’s not over. To be continued.”

During the broadcast, a series of coordinated rocket attacks hit Israeli controlled territory (thankfully resulting in no casualties). Evidently, Hamas wanted their message to have as much impact as possible and their threats to be taken seriously.

Signal hijacking is an uncommon phenomenon in this day in age. While there is a rich history of everything from harmless pranksters to State-actors taking over the airwaves for dubious purposes, the current state of most broadcasting technology prevents signal hijacking from happening anymore. Indeed, Hamas' recent effort was limited to the non-encrypted feed that is free to anyone with a satellite dish, rather the weakest link in the chain. They used a typical brute-force method of transmitting a stronger signal on the same frequency as the standard feed to drown it out. While Hamas would like to give the impression that this was a sophisticated cyber-attack, the reality of their prowess was actually fairly limited in this case. A lot of showmanship dressing up something that used to be done as a prank by bored collage kids and radio fanatics.

You might think I'm just being snide, but it is important to recognize this attack for what it was. The point of an attack like this isn't to cause actual harm, but to project the appearance of menace. To make an organization or group seem more powerful than it really is. There may be a long history of signal hijacking around the world, but that doesn't stop it from being a jarring and unsettling moment if you happen to catch it live.

For as much as I'm poking fun at the amateurish quality of their propaganda video, imagine if you had sat down in front of the TV that night, just hoping to relax after a long day. You turn on some mindless reality TV just as something to watch but suddenly, the signal pops out. Images of violence and bloodshed fill the screen. A ominous voice issues a threat and in the distance you hear the low, telltale boom of rockets exploding somewhere.

It would seem real. It would seem menacing. That's what Hamas trades in, fear and intimidation. They did this because the know the effect would be unnerving, that it would disproportionally frighten the Jewish people compared to their actual ability.

This is why it is so important to stand with Israel in their on-going struggle against extremists. To show Hamas that their cheap intimidation tactics won't work. When you stand up to a bully, you take away their power. Hamas needs to see that Israel and its international friends won't be intimidated by cheap tricks like these.

The widow's mite and the spirit of givingBy: Michael Chua

When I was young, the widow's mite was one of my favorite bible stories. Most Christians know the story off by heart, but it is still one worth repeating.

The story relates a time when Jesus, with his disciples, were in a temple watching the people give their donations. At the time, many of the rich and wealthy would use Church donations as a way to show off their prosperity and power. Sure enough, several wealthy men were in the temple that day, making as much noise and commotion as they could while depositing large numbers of coin into the offering receptacles so everyone could see what splendid gentlemen they were.

But did Jesus pay these men any mind? No. His eyes were on a poor and tired widow. A widow who meekly came to offering to give what she had - two lonely mites (the small denomination of coin possible, barely worth a few cents). When he saw this, he directed his disciples attention to the woman and said to them "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on”

The passage struck me when I was young, and its impact has only deepened with time and experience.

When I was a little boy, what impressed me about the story was the way Jesus' esteem so radically differed from everyone around him. He saw the value of giving not just in terms of money, but in faith and spirit. That he understood that to that widow, those measly copper coins meant more in her life than all the gold offered up by those rich men who could easily afford to spare it. Those two coins were of little value in an earthly sense, but spiritually, they were more precious than platinum.

As I've grown older and experienced some lean times and desperate moments in my own life, I've also come to better appreciate the faith and devotion of the widow. This was a woman who was in need of charity herself. Even still, she found the spirit to give. The faith that the Lord would know how to make better use of what little she had than she could do with it.

This widow, even in the depths of her poverty, had the perspective and insight to know that there were people even worse off than her that needed help. She had faith that the Lord would protect and sustain her, so she gave what she could. How beautiful.

What can we take away from this story? Does it mean we should literally give and give and give until we have nothing left? No. What this story teaches us is the spirit of giving. Of keeping a generous spirit towards others even when things aren't going so great in your own life. Of giving humbly and joyfully, not so others can see what a great fella you are, but to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord.

If you can afford to give, then give. It's okay if you can't give much. Even a few dollars can make an enormous impact in the lives of the hungry and endangered. Trust in the Lord like the widow did, and that money will do more than you can possibly imagine.

If you well and truly cannot afford to give any money, then give in other ways. With the advent of social media, it has never been easier to spread the word, to signal boost for a worthy cause. Share a link, raise your voice. It doesn't cost you a cent and yet the right message to the right person may save a life.

You don't need to be rich to give generously. So long as your heart and faith are in the right place, whatever you can give will be a precious gift in the eyes of the Lord.

ISRAEL TO OPEN OFFICE AT NATO HEADQUARTERS:By: Colleen Wells

Israel this week took another important step toward becoming a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance. The organization announced that it will allow Israel to open an office at NATO headquarters in Brussels to push forward a process that could ultimately lead to full-fledged membership for Israel. NATO’s 28 members include the United States, Canada, EU member states and other European countries. The alliance obligates all member states to aid a fellow member if it comes under attack. "I welcome NATO’s announcement, it is an important step that helps Israel’s security,” said PM Netanyahu. "It is further testament to Israel’s standing and the desire of many to cooperate with us in the field of security.” Israeli officials noted that NATO’s announcement came on the heels of a concerted diplomatic effort, with the help of the United States, Canada, Germany and other European countries. Along with Israel, Jordan and Bahrain also received a green light to open offices at NATO headquarters. The situation in the Middle East and spread of jihadi terrorism highlight the importance of the decision. (Algemeiner) [Comment]

SIXTH INCIDENT IN 24 HOURS: IDF SHELLED FROM GAZA: By: Colleen Wells

Terrorists in the Gaza Strip fired several mortar shells at IDF engineers operating on the Israeli side of the border on Wed. 4 May 2016, as tensions in the south continue to rise. The mortar strikes bring the total number of similar breaches of the ceasefire by Gazan terrorists in two days to six. Early the previous evening, terrorists opened fire on IDF forces just hours after PM Netanyahu made an impromptu visit to troops stationed at the border with Hamas-ruled Gaza. Israeli air strikes hit four Hamas sites in Gaza Wednesday night, the military said, following air raids earlier in the day. (INN) Intercede against the upswing in violence and tension along Israel’s southern borders. Pray for the protection of IDF troops serving in the area as well as Israel’s southern communities. UK LABOR CHIEF REFUSES TO RENOUNCE HAMAS IN PARLIAMENT: By: Colleen Wells

British PM David Cameron launched an unprecedented assault in parliament against the UK opposition leader, Labor chief Jeremy Corbyn, whose party is currently being wracked by an anti-Semitism scandal. On the eve of Israel's Holocaust Memorial Day Cameron challenged Corbyn to renounce his declaration of "friendship" with Hamas and Hezbollah, organizations whose charters commit them to destroying the State of Israel and annihilating the Jewish people. "Hamas and Hezbollah believe in killing Jews, not just in Israel but around the world... if you want to clear up the problem of anti-Semitism in the Labor Party now would be a good time: withdraw that they're your friends," Cameron challenged him. What followed was a desperate attempt by Corbyn to avoid answering the question - four separate times. At one point, a visibly outraged Cameron pushed the point even more forcefully: "Those organizations in their constitutions believe in persecuting and killing Jews," he said of the Islamist terrorist groups. "They are anti-Semitic organizations, they are racist organizations; he must stand up and stay they are not his friends!" But to no avail. Maybe that's why Hamas leaders and terrorists are remain such big fans of Corbyn. (Arutz-7) [Comment]
